As with any unpainted surface of a ship, propellers are very vulnerable to fouling. By maintaining a smooth and polished surface, the rate at which fouling is created is greatly reduced. In addition, reducing surface roughness reduces friction and allows for optimal propeller performance.
The US Navy has determined that propeller fouling can cause energy losses equivalent to half of the hull itself. 50% of the fuel savings from hull cleaning can be attributed to shaft cleaning and propeller polishing.

The benefits of boat cleaning. Saving fuel and therefore money is the primary reason for subsea hull cleaning as a fundamental maintenance and design area.
Accumulation of marine fouling, especially a productive accumulation of "hard growth" can lead to turbulence, cavitation, which often affects the performance of speed logs, echo sounders and all other sensors mounted on the hull. Pollution also leads to increased drag, with the result that the hydrodynamic performance of the ship is significantly affected and thus the relationship between speed, power, efficiency and ultimately fuel consumption.
